Custom GPT for Financial Advisers

ASIC-aware, FASEA-compliant AI that drafts SOA sections, prepares review meetings, and answers client portal questions — without ever giving regulated advice.

The compliance reality of AI in financial advice

Financial advice is one of the most heavily regulated activities in Australia. Section 766B of the Corporations Act, ASIC's RG 244 on review of advice, and the FASEA Code of Ethics all impose specific constraints on how an AI tool can be used in an advice business — and most generic chatbots fail every one of them.

A custom GPT for an AFSL-licensed practice operates under a tight set of rules: it never gives personal advice, every output is reviewed by an authorised representative, all interactions are logged for AFCA evidence purposes, and the system prompt blocks any output that could be construed as a recommendation.

Where the wins land for advice firms

SOA Section Drafter

Authorised rep dictates the rationale for a recommendation; the GPT formats it into an SOA-compliant section with the right disclosures, fee disclosure language, and FSG references. Saves 3–4 hours per SOA.

Review Meeting Prep

Connected to Xplan or AdviserLogic. Adviser asks 'pull up the Smith family review for tomorrow' — GPT outputs a meeting brief with portfolio performance, super contribution caps, life event flags, and items raised at last review.

Client Portal FAQ

Answers 'when's my next contribution due?', 'what's my insurance cover?', 'can I withdraw under compassionate grounds?'. Pulls from the live planning system, never gives advice, always refers advice questions to the adviser.

Compliance Pre-Check

Reviews draft SOAs and ROAs against your licensee's checklist before the compliance team sees them. Catches the 80% of issues that make compliance reviews slow.

Compliance posture, in detail

What AFSL holders see in the first quarter

An advice business with 6 advisers and 1,400 active clients in Brisbane reduced average time-to-issue an SOA from 14 business days to 4 business days using a section-drafting GPT. A self-licensed practice in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs cut compliance pre-check rejection rate from 23% to 7% by running drafts through an AI compliance pre-check before submission.

The adviser is the regulated source of advice. Always. The GPT explicitly never says 'you should do X'. Every output ends with 'this requires authorised representative review' and the licensee's AFSL number remains the regulated source of any advice given to the client.

Frequently asked questions

Is using AI in advice consistent with FASEA Standards?

Yes, when properly governed. The FASEA Code requires the adviser to act with competence, diligence, and skill — using AI to accelerate research and drafting is consistent with that standard, provided the adviser reviews and takes responsibility for every output. We help firms document the AI usage in their compliance manual.

Can it draft a complete SOA?

It can draft sections — the rationale, the strategy summary, the disclosure boilerplate. The adviser remains responsible for the recommendation logic and the personal advice elements. Most firms see 50–60% of the SOA composition automated, with the adviser focused on the parts that require professional judgement.

Does it integrate with Xplan and AdviserLogic?

Yes. Both have integration paths — Xplan via the iRequest API and AdviserLogic via their REST API. Some sole-trader practices we work with use Midwinter Reach instead; that's also supported.

What about ASIC's review of advice technology guidance?

ASIC's RG 274 and RG 244 both contemplate technology-assisted advice provided the licensee retains the responsibilities. The GPT is positioned as an authorised representative's tool, not a digital adviser, which is the simpler regulatory posture. Robo-advice (giving advice directly to consumers) is a different licensing framework we don't recommend most practices pursue.
